Nearly everything on Gawker sites is either clickbait garbage or trying really hard to push a political agenda into things. I tend to not venture far from Oppo because it’s community driven and has the least political bullshit.

Honestly, I think I’ve had enough. Oppo is pretty solid, but – damnit – these banner ads near where I’m typing
right now
enrich the mothership eventually. Somewhat torn on what to do from here.

I’ve trolled the Gawkerverse for a while now, and this article was the first time I seriously considered jumping ship. Garbage from top to bottom.

Don’t get too worked up about it. Stay here in Valhalla.

I’m about there. I feel filthy having it in my address bar. Felt that sharing it on my humble little spot on Oppo, as off-topic as it is, is the least I can do to make others think twice about this place.
Honestly, I feel like I need a shower.

I’m glad they are cross-posting it to other frontpages. That’s nice.

Gawker has always been like that... Nothing new to see here. Someone’s dick picture is suddenly laying around?? See it on Gawker! Someone has a sex-tape surfacing all of a sudden? Gawker too!! Or maybe someone got his legs cut on camera following a terrorist attack???? Yes, zoomed in pictures of the limbs!!!
Gawker has always been like that. I don’t see what’s so surprising about all this.

They’re greedy, ruin a mans life for a hundred grand in ad revenue? Sure, why the fuck not, we’re the internet equivalent of the national enquirer.

While I usually don’t have that big a problem with Gawker, that article is just beyond vile. There’s no political or any other kind of relevance and the victim did nothing to deserve this. People at Gawker are going to lose their jobs over this, and rightfully so.

You know, although there is a lot of crap in the gawkerverse, I usually cut the writers some slack. They have to dig something new up everyday to make a bit of money, and that is REALLY hard to do - and still create something actually good. So basically you have people who put out a total shit article every now and then just to get the $$$. When you have to do that, you cut corners. You don’t research every article well, you repeat faulty information, missrepresent situations accidentally - or on purpose to make something out of nothing. I’ve been there I get it. I hate it. And I hate that it pretends to be journalism, and I think it’s ultimately damaging to our society. But I get it.
This one though is low. So much lower than typical tabloid crappiness. It’s not simply laziness or indifference like that which taints most of gawker’s worst articles. It’s unethical, it’s creepy, and rather shitty really. The other mind boggling thing is if Jordan Sargent had done any googling on his source, he’d find out that this escort has a bad reputation in the porn industry and escort community. Basically he’s not a trustworthy source, and nobody seems to find him credible even in the circles he operates in. Which makes it even more mind boggling that he went ahead and wrote an article based on what this guy had to say.
It’s gawker’s fault for publishing the article, but ultimately it was only one person who wrote it. Maybe they’ll fire Sargent and redeem themselves.

It’s getting progressively worse, I agree.
(long rant follows, ignore if you want)
Even something that should be politically neutral or agnostic like Oppo gets innundated with topics that dont necessarily appeal to all or kost users, but might satsfy (or provoke) more active users to be, well, even more active. For example, the rainbow banner logo (and highly pixelated at that), which I know upset some users and made them and others feel alienated while at the same time making others feel superior, which made the whole thing look like a juvenile power struggle. Then, of course the backlash: anyone expressing the opinion that Oppo should be apolitical from a top-down perspective got vehemently and prejudicously attacked or chastised even if they may have agreed with the stance presented, and not just with the rainbow thing.
Naturally some politics do come into conversation like the “Chicken Tax”, local and national laws, recalls with NHTSA oversight, fuel prices and alternative fuels, etc.. which is OK, but is meant to be grounded in free expression inherent in Oppo, but there are other Gawker blogs for more politically charged topics. I made the point relative to the rainbow banner that it was exclusionary to some folk - both positive and negative - and that such discussions might be more at home on the RoyGBiv subblog so we could keep the focus more automotively-based here, and I got accused of being prejudiced and bigoted, even though I made - and intentionally strive to continue to make - no public opinion of my own regarding the topic, because to me, the same attitude should prevail regardless of the politically-charged topic of the moment at hand. That is to say, this is a blog-style forum with many users, and user-created and -shared content, and users should feel free to post what they want (within reason, because some stuff really doesn’t fit and is better served elsewhere), and the mods should be there merely as moderators of a forum, guiding conversations to the correct places, keeping errant items in check, and having little agenda outside of those prerogatives.

I’m not going to click on it, but I’m not sure I’d be surprised by anything that gawker puts out anymore.

I refuse to read it. That’s a man’s private life, and it’s none of my business. And, of course, I don’t want Kinja getting ad revenue.
